Maravot's Synoptic Matrix

A comparison of the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke
plus the Gospel of John laid beside them

(previously published in 1993 as part of our Buckley Series  under the title of
"Of Epicureans, Stoics & other ways to find Good")

The order of the matrix emphasizes differences among the gospels and refers to identical verses merely by the notation of chapter and verse. Where you see a chapter and verse cited without the saying, etc., assume that it is identical to the verse in the left hand column which is mostly Matthew's Gospel.

The Matrix shows how Matthew embellished, as it were, Mark's gospel and Luke followed Matthew and Mark, noting differences in chronology and also correcting Matthew. In Matthew the man with the withered arm, for instance, Luke shows is a man whose right arm is withered. So Luke elaborates where he thought appropriate. I have high-lighted texts which Matthew should have been following in Mark but did not pick up from Mark; likewise do we see details in Luke which he omits though presumably following Matthew and Mark.

In the matrix we also see how Luke remembers two beatitude scenes as to Matthew's remembrance of the Sermon on the Mount (but we see also in Matthew a reminder by Jesus how he had fed the 5,000 and then the 4,000 with fishes and loaves).

Then he took the 12 and said, behold

we go up to Jerusalem and all things

that are written by the prophets

concerning the son of Man shall be

accomplished:

He shall be delivered unto the

Gentiles & shall be mocked &

spitefully entreated, and spit upon.

And they shall scourge Him & put

Him to death & the 3rd day He shall

rise again.

Then came the mother of Zebedee's

children with her sons, saying:

Grant these two sons to sit next to you

in thy Kingdom.

Can ye drink of my cup..&.. Baptized

with the Baptism I am Baptized with?

Ye surely shall drink of my cup, but..

The Father sets the seating

arrangement.

When the 10 heard it they were

indignant against the 2 brethren

But Jesus called them unto him and

said, Ye know taht the princes of

the Gentiles exercise dominion over

them, and they that are great

exercise authority upon them.

Whosoever be chief, let him be your

servant.

Son of Man came not to be ministered

to but to give ransom for many

As they departed from Jericho a great

multitude followed. 2 blind

men said: Have mercy on us O Lord,

Thou Son of David; they were healed..

When they came near to Jerusalem

& Bethpage at Mt. of Olives Jesus

sent 2 disciples

Loose an ass and her colt & bring

them to me. Fulfills prophesy:

"Behold the king cometh on an

ass & a colt the foal of an ass

Great multitude spread garments in the

way; others cut down branches

from the trees

Hosanna to the Son of David:

"Blessed is he that cometh in the

Name of the Lord"

And when come into Jerusalem all

the people asked, Who is this?

Multitude said, this is Jesus the

prophet of Nazareth of Galilee

Jesus went into the temple & over-

threw the tables of money changers

healed the blind and the lame

Chief priests displeased when they

saw this and the children crying,

"Hosanna to the Son of David"

Jesus said, Out of Babes & sucklings

thou hath perfected praise

Went to lodge in Bethany

Returned to Jerusalem in the morning;

hungry & cursed a fig tree and

it withered

Disciples saw the fig tree wither

and they marvelled

Went into the temple; priests asked,

"By what authority do you teach

these things?"

Jesus answered: the Baptism of John,

whence was it? No answer, for all

held John as a prophet

Taught Parables:

Two sons of vineyard-John came

in righteousness but ye believed

him not

Householder planted a vineyard &

sent his sons

The stone builders rejected is the

head of the corner

Therefore kingdom of God shall be

taken from you & given to a nation

bringing forth the

fruits thereof.

Then they sought to lay a hand on him

but they feared the multitude who

took him for a prophet

Pharisees took council how they might

entangle him.

Sent unto him their disciples and

Herodians asking, is it lawful to give

tribute to Caesar?

Answer: Give unto Caesar what is

Caesar's and to God what is God's

That same day came the Sadducees

which say there is no resurrection.

If a man die and all his wives died,

to whom would he be married

in heaven?

You do not marry in the resurrection

You have been told, I am the God

of Abraham, etc; god is a God of the

living, not the dead.

A lawyer asked, What is the great

commandment?

Thou shalt love thy God, thy

neighbors, etc.

On these two commandments hang

all the law and the prophets

Pharisees asked, What think ye of

Christ? They say unto him the

Son of David

Jesus Answered: How then doth David

call him Lord: "The Lord said unto

my Lord, sit..[etc.]?"

No man dared ask him any question

after that

Scribes & Pharisees sit in Moses'

seat..dow what they bid but don't do

what they do

Poor widow threw 2 mites tithe in

the temple

This poor widow cast more in than

all they who cast in the treasury,

for she cast in all that she had

Pogrom against the Scribes &

Pharisees

Be ye not called rabbi

Call no man your Father

Never be called Masters

He that is greatest shall be your

servant

Whosoever exalteth himself shall

be abased

[Lawyers]..Ye shut up the kingdom

against men yet neither do you go in

yourselves

Whether is greater, the gold or the

temple; or whether is greater, the altar

or the temple

Ye pay tithe of mint & anise, [etc.],

and have omitted the weightier

matters

Ye blind--ye strain at a gnat &

swallow a camel

Ye are like whitened sepulchres

Wherefore I send forth prophets,

wise men & scribes, and ye kill

and persecute them.

Beware of leaven, etc.--said in

Galilee, not Jerusalem per Luke

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God..and thy neighbor, etc.

To love neighbor as himself is more than all the whole burnt offerings and Sacrifices; thou art not far from the kingdom of God

9.55 Ye know not what manner of Spirit ye are of

9.56 For the Son of Man is not come to destroy men's lives but to save them.

9.57 A certain man came to him, saying, I will follow thee

9.58 Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes & birds of the air have their nests but the Son of Man hath no where to lay his head

18.35 and it came to pass, he came nigh unto Jericho a certain blind man sat by the way begging: Jesus thou Son of David, have Mercy on me..

19.41 Came near to the city and he wept over it.

19.43 Days shall come when thy

19.44 and shall lay thee even with the ground

19.45 and went intot he temple & began to cast them out that sold therein: Ye have made it a den of thieves

19.47 and he taught daily in the temple but the chief priests & the scribes & the chief of the people sought to destroy him

19.48 ..but all the people were attentive to him

11.38 Entered into a certain village: & a certain woman named Martha received him into her house

20.46 Beware of the Scribes which desire to walk in long robes and love greetings in the markets and the highest seats in the synagogues.

20.47 Which devour widow's houses and for a show make long prayers..

21.1 And he looked up and saw rich men casting their gifts in the treasury

21.1 A certain widow was seen casting thither 2 mites;

she cast in all she had

18.10 [after parable of 2 men who went to the temple]..for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased.

11.46 Ye laden men with burdens which ye yourselves touch not.

11.52 Woe unto you lawyers! For ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves and them that were entering ye hindred.

11.42 For ye tithe mint & rue & all manner of herbs & pass over judgment..

11.44 ye are like graves that appear not

11.49 Therefore also said the Wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles & sons of them they shall slay and persecute.

11.51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple; verily, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation [see the Infancy Gospel of James which gives details of this murder of the Baptist's high-priest father]

12.1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees.

12.2 There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed

12.3 Whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness, shall be heard in the light; that which ye have spoken in closets shall be shouted from the rooftops

12.4 Fear him that hath power to cast you into hell.

12.6 Are not 5 sparrows sold for..

12.10 But unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven

12.12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say

12.13 One said, Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me

12.14 Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?

12.15 Parable of rich man who had no room to store his abundance

12.21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.

12.13 The next day (5 days before the Passover) the people laid palm branches before Jesus as they went forth to meet him [see line 1178]

12.31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

12.32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

12.33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

12.34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever: & how sayest thou, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?

12.35 Then Jesus said unto them, a little while is light with you..

12.36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be children of light. these things spake Jesus and departed and did hide himself from them.

12.37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him.

12.38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord who hath believed our report? & to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

12.47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I jduge him not; for I came not to judge the world but to save the world.

12.13 (6 days before Passover) ..laid Palm branches and cried Hosanna, etc.

12.14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon, as it is written,

12.15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold thy King cometh, sitting on an ass' colt.

12.16 These things understood not his disciples at the first..

2.14 and found in the tempole those that sold oxen and sheep & doves and the changers of money sitting

2.15 and when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the tmeple, & the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changer's money, and over threw the tables;

2.16 And said unto them that sol doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

2.17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

12.1 Six days before Passover Jesus visits Mary's house and is anointed by her and his feet are wiped with her hair. Was after Lazarus was raised. The people, knowing he was there came to visit him, as he was famous for having raised Lazarus from the dead.

12.13 The next day (5 days before Passover) the people laid palm branches gbefore Jesus as they went forth to meet him.

12.31 Now is the judgment of this world..

2.18 [after purging the temple] then answered the Jews & said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

2.19 Jesus answered & said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in 3 days I will raise it up.

2.20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in 3 days?

2.21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

4.1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

4.2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

4.3 he left Judaea, and departed again in Galilee.

4.4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
