Maravot's Synoptic Matrix

A comparison of the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke
plus the Gospel of John laid beside them

(previously published in 1993 as part of our Buckley Series  under the title of
"Of Epicureans, Stoics & other ways to find Good")

The order of the matrix emphasizes differences among the gospels and refers to identical verses merely by the notation of chapter and verse. Where you see a chapter and verse cited without the saying, etc., assume that it is identical to the verse in the left hand column which is mostly Matthew's Gospel.

The Matrix shows how Matthew embellished, as it were, Mark's gospel and Luke followed Matthew and Mark, noting differences in chronology and also correcting Matthew. In Matthew the man with the withered arm, for instance, Luke shows is a man whose right arm is withered. So Luke elaborates where he thought appropriate. I have high-lighted texts which Matthew should have been following in Mark but did not pick up from Mark; likewise do we see details in Luke which he omits though presumably following Matthew and Mark.

In the matrix we also see how Luke remembers two beatitude scenes as to Matthew's remembrance of the Sermon on the Mount (but we see also in Matthew a reminder by Jesus how he had fed the 5,000 and then the 4,000 with fishes and loaves).

O Jerusalem, Thou that killeth

the prophets. How often I would

have gathered thee beneath my

wings but ye would not

ye shall not see me henceforth 'till

ye shall say, "blessed is he who

cometh in the name of the Lord"

Jesus departed the temple & said,

not one stone of this temple

shall be left upon another

Sat on Mt of Olives &

prophesied things to come:

Disciples asked, when shall these

things come

Many shall come in my name and

deceive many

When ye hear wars & rumors of

wars--be not troubled

Nations..against nations, famines

pestilence, earthquakes; these

are the beginning of sorrows

Then ye shall be delivered up &

shall behated of all the nations for

my name's sake; and then ye shall

betray one another

Many false prophets shall arise

& iniquity shall abound; love

shall wax cold

And this gospel of the kingdom

shall be preached in all the world

for a witness unto all nations; &

then shall the end come

(Consider the Lilies: Luke 12.27)

(Solomon in.. Luke 12.27)

(If God clothe..Luke 12.28)

(treasure in heaven: Luke 12.33)

(where your treasure: Luke 12.34)

When the abomination of

desolation is seen standing in the

Holy Place then flee, etc.

Woe unto them with child; pray

your flight is not in winter

Then shall be great tribulation

Except those days be shortened

there should be no flesh saved

Then if you see Christ believe it

not, for false christs shall arise

As lightening cometh out of the

east & shineth even unto the west,

so shall the coming of the Son of

Man be

Wheresoever the carcass is there

will the eagles gather

Sun shall be darkened & the moon

will not give her light; & the stars

shall fall

And a Sign of the Son of Man

shall appear in heaven. They shall see

the Son of Man coming in the Clouds

He shall send forth his angels to

gather His elect

Parable of the Fig tree

This generation shall not pass 'till

all be fulfilled

But as the days of Noe so shall the

days of the Son of Man be

Two shall be in a field, one taken

If the goodman had known what

watch the thief would come his

home would not be broken up

The Son of Man cometh when ye

least expect Him

If that evil remnant shall say my Lord

delayeth his coming, the Lord shall

suddenly appear to punish him

Jesus departed from the temple..

(Ye shall be hated: per Luke 21.17)

(There shall be signs: per Luke 21.23)

Teachings on Mt. of Olives (cont.)

Parables:

Kingdom like 10 Virgins with lamps

Kindom like a man traveling into

a far country...

...before the Son of Man shall be

gathered all the nations

..Then shall the king say to the

sheep on his right hand, Come ye

inherit the kingdom, etc.

...to those on his left he shall curse

to everlasting fire, because I was

hungry, and ye fed me not; I was

athirst, etc.

Closes teaching: in 2 days is the

Passover & the Son of Man is to be

betrayed to be crucified.

Then assembled the chief priests &

scribes & elders unto Caiaphas'

palace to consult on killing Jesus

..but not on the Feast Day lest the

people arise

When Jesus was in Bethany, in Simon

the Leper's house, a woman with an

albastar box came to him

and anointed him with precious

ointment on his head.

Disciples indignant

Jesus replied, ye have the poor

always, but me not always

...This woman shall be a sign

wherever the Gospel is preached

Then Judas Iscariot went to the priests

& covenanted to betray him

for 30 pieces of silver

(The next day) The first day of the

feast of Unleavened Bread the

disciples came to Jesus:

Where wilt thou have Passover?

Go to such a man in the city &

tell him I will keep the Passover

in his house

That evening he sat at feast with the

twelve

One shall betray me..each asked in

turn, Is it I?

He that dippeth his hand, the same

shall betray me

Woe to him who betrays me; better

he be not born

Judas asked, Master is it I? Jesus

answered, Thou hast said.

17.20 Pharisees (not the disciples) asked, when would the Kingdom come?

17.21 Kingdom is within you

17.23 If they say see here or see there, go not after them (re: above)

21.8 For many shall come in my name, saying I am Christ, but the time draweth near; go ye not, threfore, after them.

21.9 ye shall hear of wars & commotions, be not terrified.

21.11 Great earthquakes in diverse places, famines & pestilences & great signs in heaven

21.12 But before these they shall lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synogogues and into prisons, being brought before kings & rulers for my name's sake

21.14 Do not meditate what ye shall answer

21.15 For I will give you a mouth & wisdom

21.13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony

12/22 Therefore take no thought for your life, what ye shall want

12.24 Consider the ravens, etc.

12.27 Consider the lilies of the field..Solomon, in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these

12.28 If God clothe the grass which is tommorrow for the oven, how much more will he clothe you?

Seek ye the Kingdom of God & all things shall be give unto you

12.32 Fear not little flock, it is the Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom

12.33 Sell that ye have & give alms, provide yourselves days which wax not old; a treasure in heaven that faileth not, where neither thief nor moth corrupt

12.34 For where your treasure is there will be your heart also

17.23 If they say see here or see there go not after them

17.24 As lightening shineth from one part of heaven to another, so also shall the Son of Man be in his day

17.37 Wheresoever the body is the eagles shall gather

21.26 Ye shall see signs in the sun, moon & stars, etc.

21.27 Then shall they see the Son of Man coming in a Cloud with great power & glory

21.28 Then look up for your redemption draweth nigh

21.29 Then spake He of the parable of the Fig Tree

21.32

17.28 As it was in the days of Noah, so shall the days of the Son of Man be

17.29 Likewise as it ws in Sodom..

17.30 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it

17.34 Two in one bed; one will be taken

12.39 same as Matthew: home broken into

12.40 Be ready, for the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not

21.36 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell upon the face of the whole earth

12.40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of Man cometh at at an hour when ye think not

12.45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My Lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

12.46 The Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

21.36 Watch, therefore..that ye may escape all these things..and to stand before the Son of Man

21.37 And in the day time he was teaching 10 men in the temple and at night he went out and abode in Mt. of Olives

21.38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him

21.16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents & brethren and Kindsmen and friends & some of you shall they cause to put to

death

21.17 And ye shall be hated for my name's sake

21.20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies then know that the desolation thereof is nigh

21.21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains

21.22 For these be the days of vengeance

21.23 Woe unto them with child; there shall be great distress & wrath upon the people

21.24 and they shall fall by the edge of the sword & shall be led away captive to all the nations; & Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentile until the time of the Gentiles be fulfilled

21.25 There shall be signs in the sun & moon & stars; the powers heaven shall be shaken

12.36 And be yourselves like unto men that wait for the Lord when he will return from the wedding..

12.37 Blessed are those servants whom the Lord when He cometh shall find watching

12.48 For unto whomsoever much is given, much shall be required

12.49 I am come to send fire on earth. What will I if it be already kindled?

12.51 Suppose ye that I come to give peace on earth? I tell you nay, but rather division

12.52 Henceforth there shall be 5 in one house divided

12.54 Father shall be divided against son...

17.25 But first He must suffer many things

22.1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover

22.2 And the chief priests & scribes sought how they might kill him. For they feared the people.

7.37 Woman who was a sinner brought an albastar box

7.38 and stood weeping behind him; began to wash his feet with her tears & did wipe them with the hairs of her head & kissed his feet and anointed them.

7.39 Pharisees said this man is not a prophet; otherwise he would hve known she is a sinner

7.40 Parable of the Creditor who forgave much

7.47 Her sins which are many are forgiven, but to whom little is given, the same loseth much.

7.49 Pharisees asked, Who is this who forgiveth sins also?

22.3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscarieot..

22.4 ...and communed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray him

22.5 and he promised to betray him in the absence of the multitude

22.7...when the Passover Lamb must be killed

22.8 And he sent Peter & John saying, go and prepare us the Passover that we may eat.

22.10 ..and shall meet a man with a pitcher, follow him

22.11 Say unto the goodman of the house, "Where is the guest chamber where I shall eat the Passover with my

disciples

22.12

22.14 And when the hour was come he sat down with the 12 apostles

22.15 With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer

22.18 For I say unto you that I will not anymore eat thereof until it be fullfilled

in the Kingdom of God

22.23 They began each to inquire which of them should do this

22.21 Behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me at the table; it is one of the 12 who dippeth his hand with me in the dish.

22.22 Woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed

12.1 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whoh he raised from the dead

12.2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one that sat at the table with him

12.3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus..[then the next day the people laid Palm branches, etc. and He rode into Jeruslam on the colt. This was followed by teachings on light, how the Father is light and Truth and arguments why He is come to do the will of the Father].

12.50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak, threfore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

13.1 Now before the feast of

the Passover, when Jesus

knew that his hour was come

that he should depart out of

in the world, he loved them

13.2 And supper being ended, the devil , having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

13.3 Jesus knowing..began to wash the disciples feet..[see 13.18 also]

13.11 ...for he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

13.22 Then the disciples looked on one another, doubting of whom he spake.

13.23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples whom Jesus loved.

13.24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned unto him, that he should ask who it should be

13.25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord who is it?

13.26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop...he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon

13.28 , 29 ..No man...knew for what intent he spake this unto him [Judas]..because Judas had the bag..because Jesus had said unto him,

Buy those things, etc.
